چکیده

From workers of the red wood ant Formica rufa L. 68 compounds could be identified by com bined gas chrom atography-m ass spectrometry. Abdom ina contain a row of bishom ologue saturated and unsaturated uneven numbered hydrocarbons with undecane as the major product. In addition, 13 formic acid esters could be identified among which hexadecyl formate is present in particularly large amounts. Main components of the head extracts are methyl 3-ethyl-4-methylpentanoate, 3-ethyl-4-methylpentanol and tricosane.

Similarity of Body Size in Queens of the Wood ant Formica aquilonia from Optimal and Sub-Optimal Habitats Indicates a Strong Heritable Component

Body size in animals is affected by both genes and the environment (e.g., the amount of food resources). In ants, body size is related to several traits in an individual's physiology and life history. For example, a large queen may increase offspring production, thus increasing her overall fitness. In this study, whether sub-optimal environmental conditions affect the body size of queens of the...

To systematics of the mite genus Hoplocheylus (Acariformes: Tarsocheylidae).

A new species of the genus Hoplocheylus Atyeo and Baker, 1964 (Acariformes: Heterostigmatina: Tarsocheylidae), H. magnificus sp. nov. is described from the nest of the ant Formica rufa Linnaeus (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) from Kurgan Province, Western Siberia, Russia. A poorly-known species Hoplocheylus sogdianicus Barilo and Sharipov, 1987 is redescribed from the holotype. A key to species of th...

Early Results of Three-Year Monitoring of Red Wood Ants’ Behavioral Changes and Their Possible Correlation with Earthquake Events

Short-term earthquake predictions with an advance warning of several hours or days are currently not possible due to both incomplete understanding of the complex tectonic processes and inadequate observations. Abnormal animal behaviors before earthquakes have been reported previously, but create problems in monitoring and reliability. The situation is different with red wood ants (RWA; Formica ...

The Role of Molehills and Grasses for Filial Nest Founding in the Wood Ant Formica exsecta (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

In polydomous populations of the wood ant Formica exsecta filial nest founding is common. This is relevant for colony dynamics, short-distance dispersal and colony survival. However, little is known about nest site choice, microsite requirements and the nest-building behavior itself. In this context we evaluate the role of the European mole, Talpa europaea, as an ecosystem engineer that provide...

Incomplete Homogenization of Chemical Recognition Labels Between Formica sanguinea and Formica rufa Ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) Living in a Mixed Colony

Formica sanguinea Latreille (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) is a slave-making species, i.e., it raids colonies of host species and pillages pupae, which are taken to develop into adult workers in a parasite colony. However, it has been unclear if the coexistence of F. sanguinea with slave workers requires uniformity of cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs), among which those other than n-alkanes are believed...
